It’s official name is Makena Cove although the guidebooks call it Secret Cove. Well, since the guidebooks mention it you know it’s not a secret any longer! We get the most requests for Makena Cove because it turns out to be the best known beach to wedding couples on the island. Which brings us to Pam and Bryan, 2 of the nicest people we’ve had the pleasure of working with. We somehow had the whole beach (about the size of a large backyard) to ourselves. This is not always the case at Makena Cove, sometimes it even disappears if the tides are up and the swell come out of the east, but the gods were with Pam and Bryan who got a beautiful afternoon, some sweet Hawaiian music and some killer images. Misty and James got themselves Maui’d back in August and we thought we’d put a few images up. It was a cool, partly cloudy day at Kapalua Bay and Dennis, one of the fine ministers we retain from our Maui Wedding Planner business, pulled out all the stops for a beautiful summer ceremony. We get to do the occasional local wedding here in Maui and it’s always fun to hook up with one of Maui’s ohana and get some great imagery. Yesterday, we had the pleasure of spending a few hours with Kahikolu and Kimo who married in a small church here in Wailuku and then had a lavish lunch reception at the King Kamehameha golf course (The poke was ono). It was your typical Maui Wedding Day - Warm, bright and breezy. So breezy, that we almost lost a flex fill but one of the guests was kind enough to chase it down the hill. Mahalo! As professional Maui Photographers, we have the honor of photographing folks from all across the globe. While we love ALL our clients, some of them sparkle and shine like no others. Such was the case with Christelle and Jefferey. A couple, obviously very much in love with a beautiful family in tow, we were privileged to photograph their wedding at Kapalua Bay on July 28, 2010. Rev. Pia did his usual outstanding job and the evening was perfect! Some pictures of the event follow.

April is always a busy month here on the valley isle; the weather is beautiful, cool crisp nights and bright sunny days that hover around 80 degrees. Perfect for ocean kayaking or a round of drinks at the pool bar. Rochelle and Hedley decided April was a good month to tie the knot so they talked a group of their friends and family, some of them from down under, into taking the plane ride out to paradise. I’m sure they didn’t have to twist their arms! The wedding was beautiful and the weather cooperated with us. After a bright blue wedding we finished with a gorgeous Makena Sunset. While we spend a lot of time doing wedding photography, we are also Maui commercial photographers and enjoy the assignments that come along in that arena. Recently, we had the opportunity to do an estate in Kaanapali for magazine publication. The home was a beautiful one, with outrageous ocean and island views, where you could sit on your lanai and watch the skins tournament. We got some killer images and had a good time doing it.
Lighting and staging a house is radically different from the wedding photography we do and requires a whole host of equipment we never use on location for a beach gig. In some ways it’s easier, because the house doesn’t move around or get emotional, but in other ways it presents challenges you’ll never have at a wedding. It’s good to do different things and we’re glad to have the opportunity.

A Maui destination wedding is one of the best ways to tie the knot. Maui has a large pool of professional photographers, awesome venues, reliable wedding planners and some of the best catering on earth. We were fortunate to have the chance to photograph Candice and Josh at the Haiku Mill, a rustic and beautiful wedding venue on the north shore of Maui. I’m posting a few shots from the wedding from inside the guest house where brides often get ready, as well as some shots from the outside. On June 3rd, 2010 we had the pleasure of photographing Mary Kate and Dan at a morning ceremony on Kapalua Bay Beach. The morning was cool, as is usual and a little cloudy which softens the light and acts like a huge softbox. The wedding was intimate, about 15 guests in attendance and was beautiful.

What about the sunset, you say? Simple, Mary Kate booked us for the next evening, in a different location, to do those shots. The morning wedding gives the family a free day to celebrate and the evening sunset session the next day gives the couple a chance to rest and go at it again.
